Results of the Fifth Meeting of the Kazakh-Uzbek Joint Working Group on Environmental Protection and Water Quality in the Syr Darya River Basin

On December 14-15, 2022 the 5th meeting of the joint Kazakh-Uzbek Working Group on Environmental Protection and Water Quality in the Syr Darya River Basin supported by the Blue Peace Central Asia initiative, with CAREC acting as the Secretariat, was held in Tashkent.

The permanent members of the Kazakh-Uzbek Working Group, as well as representatives of the environmental agencies of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as observers took part in the meeting.

As part of the activities of the joint Working Group in 2022, the Parties presented the results of the agreed water sampling of the Syr Darya River by the Parties, taking into account the time of runoff and exchange of data on water quality of the Syr Darya River, presented a review of the quality status along the Kazakh part of the Syr Darya River, and noted that the dynamics of the Syr Darya River quality status has not changed significantly. During the meeting, the reports on the works carried out in 2021-2022 to control the water quality of the river were heard. Parties noted the need to direct the Commission's work to carry out measures to combat and suppress pollution of the Syr Darya River, and to develop joint preventive measures.

At the end of the meeting, the Parties elaborated and agreed upon the Work Plan of the Working Group for 2023, and considered issues on further expansion of cooperation in the field of water quality.
